Colonists' Day
Colonists’ Day will
begin in Fort Christina Park at 11:00 am.
Little Key,
the ship’s boat for the Kalmar Nyckel, the Tall Ship of
Delaware, will sail past the Park and fire a salute. Then, the
traditional “Landing Day” activities will be held with proclamations and
presentations commemorating the landing of the Kalmar Nyckel
and the Fogel Grip and the establishment of the New Sweden
Colony. New this year will be a ceremonial greeting of Governor Printz
and crewmembers from the Little Key by Chief Dennis Coker
and Darius Puff of the Lenni Lenape tribe.
Fort Christina Park will
be open to the public from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for these Colonists’
Day festivities as well as other activities. We are pleased to announce
that Darius Puff will be in the park making a presentation on the Lenape
people and culture through storytelling, furs and artifacts In
addition, the public may view the Milles Monuments from 1938 and the
original Stalcop/Fennimore log cabin relocated from Prices Corner.
There will be
additional activities including tours at Holy Trinity “Old Swedes”
Church and the Hendrickson House (located at 7th and Church
Streets) and New Sweden Centre (located at the Kalmar Nyckel shipyard,
1124 E. 7th Street). Colonial games and children’s activities will be
held throughout the day. Children may put on colonial clothing for a
picture taking opportunity. Viking re-enactors will also have the Viking
Ship Norseman on display. At Old Swedes Church at 1:00
p.m., there will be a book signing of the brand new book (3/7/2011)
Swedes of the Delaware Valley (Images of America Series) by
Margaret Murray Thorell Ph.D. In the event of inclement weather, the
book signing and Darius Puff will be in Holy Trinity “Old Swedes”
Church.
